Microbial Culture Evaluation of the Local Anesthetic Cartridges External Surface

Objectives: Evaluation of possible micobial contamination of anesthetic cartridges surface and whether it can be added to the strile surgical set of instruments or not?

Methods: Random sampling was performed and 1200 Iranian and imported carthridges were transformed to diffrent culture media( aerobic. unaerobic and fungal). After 24-48 houres of incubation, samples were transfered to specific culture media. Cultured bacteria were stained using gram staining method. The study was carried out in a 6 months period.

Results: 6.3 percent of aerobic cultures, 1.8 percent of unaerobic cultures and 0.7 percent of fungal cultures were contamintad to diffrent tyoes of microorganismes.

Conclusions: The contamination of carthridges is not ignorable and adding it to the strile surgical set is not recommended.
