A clinico-pathological study of ameloblastoma of the jaws NOT PRESENTED
Objectives: Ameloblastoma is a benign but locally aggressive and infiltrative odontogenic neoplasm with a rare capacity to metastasize. Although it has been reported to comprise only 1.3% of all jaw tumors and cysts, it is the most common odontogenic neoplasm after odontoma in oral cavity. The purpose of this study was to investigate the clinico-pathological presentation of ameloblastoma in Mashhad Dental School in the last 10 years. Materials & Methods: Data were collected from the archive of the department of oral pathology of Mashhad Dental School in the last 10 years (1996-2006) and all slides of ameloblastoma were examined by an oral pathologist. Clinical and histo-pathological findings were recorded. Results: There were 67 odontogenic tumor, of which 28 were ameloblastoma(41.7%). The patients’ ages at biopsy ranged from 9 to 72 years (mean 28.28 years) with a peak age incidence in the 2nd and 3rd decades. There were 15 females and 13 males .22 ameloblastomas involved the mandible and 3 were in maxilla. The incidence of unicystic and multicystic ameloblastoma in this series were 42.9% and 57.1% respectively.Histologically follicular and plexiform patterns were equally seen in solid ameloblastoma, other patterns were acanthomatosis, angiomathosis, granular, desmoplastic and basaloid. Swelling, tooth mobility and pain were the clinical symptoms and signs. Conclusion: Ameloblastoma in this study exhibit predominance of females and multi-cystic morphologic type. There is predilection for the mandible. Key words: Ameloblastoma, clinico-pathological, jaws, tumors
