Determining the relationship between the frequency of pulp stones and systemic diseases using radiographic imaging

Objectives: Pulp stones are the focal point of calcification in the dental pulp, which is commonly seen in conventional dental radiography. The prevalence of pulp stones varies according to location, age, dental health and systemic diseases.
Methods: The present study was a descriptive-analytic and cross-sectional study performed on 400 patients referring to Radiology Department of Tabriz Dental Faculty. Patients' demographic characteristics and the presence of systemic diseases (cardiovascular, diabetes mellitus and renal) were recorded in the checklist. The stereotypes were evaluated using a negatoscope and a magnifying glass with 5.5 x magnification in favorable lighting conditions to determine the presence or absence of pulp stones or any calcification, such as narrowing of the dental pulp chamber
Results: The results of comparing the prevalence of pulp stones in patients with cardiovascular, diabetes mellitus and renal diseases and healthy subjects shows that the disease is prevalent in 15% of healthy subjects, 39% of patients with cardiac diseases, 28% of patients with renal diseases and 30% of patients with diabetes mellitus. Chi-square test shows a significant difference between the prevalence of pulp stones in healthy individuals and patients suffering from cardiovascular, diabetes mellitus and renal diseases.
Conclusions: Pulp stones are a common finding, which are significantly related with systemic diseases, including cardiovascular, renal and diabetes diseases. Therefore pulp stone can be introduced as an important diagnostic criterion for identifying systemic diseases.
