Association of HLA-DRB1 and DQB1 with Early Childhood Caries

Objectives: HLAs are cardinal basis of immune system. HLAs also play role in recognizition of pathogens. This study was designed to assess the association of HLA-DRB1 and DQB1 with Early Childhood Caries in order to establish this factor as an important caries risk assessments tool
Methods: the genomic DNAs were extracted from whole blood samples of 30 patients with ECC and 35 caries-free children by the Roche DNA extraction kits. The genomic DNA was amplified by PCR-SSP and then HLA-typing was performed for all alleles.
RESULTS: the frequency of HLA- DRB1, DR3, DR4, DR5 and DQB1 alleles was not significantly different between the two groups.
CONCLUSION: The above results suggest that HLA-DRB1 and DQB1 is not associated with the susceptibility to ECC. So HLA-DRB1 and DQB1 detection as a molecular marker for early diagnosis of ECC may be recommended.

Results: In caries free children we have more frequency of DRB1*03, DRB1*04, DRB1*07, DRB1*13, DRB1*16, DRB3, DRB4, DQB1*03, DQB1*05, DQB1*06. But there is no significant statistics difference in these alleles kind of both group. The frequency of DRB1*08, DRB1*12, DQB1*02 alleles was not difference in both groups. The DRB1*02 and DRB1*06 alleles were not observed in none of the samples.
Conclusions: Based on the findings of this study there is a relation between Major histo-compatible complex molecules and dental carries initiation. investigations on this field with larger samples are recommended.
