Objectives: Various factors affect pulp capping procedures when the vital dental pulp tissue needs protection. Among these factors, the selection of appropriate materials plays a key role in reaching an optimum outcome. A wide range of materials has been used and bioceramics have gained popularity in recent years as pulp capping materials due to their favorable properties. The term “bioceramics” is referred to a group of ceramics, which are used in the field of biomedicine. Bioceramics are inorganic, non-metallic, biocompatible, chemically stable, and non-corrosive materials that interact well with the living tissue. Methods: In this review, a search was conducted in PubMed, Science Direct, and Google Scholar databases by selected keywords such as dental pulp, direct & indirect pulp capping materials, and bioceramics. Then, over 40 articles between 1975 and 2016 focusing on the bioceramics as pulp capping materials were retrieved. Results: The results showed that the bioceramics with pulp capping applications are categorized into 4 groups as follows: 1) Calcium hydroxide-based materials, 2) Calcium silicate-based materials, 3) Calcium phosphate-based materials, and 4) Bioactive Glasses. Conclusions: In this review, the chemical composition, properties, advantages, disadvantages, and the ability of different types of bioceramics as pulp caaping materials to form a dentinal bridge were compared and discussed. Calcium phosphate-based materials and bioglasses seemed to have favorable results.
