Evaluation of a pilot leadership workshop for dentistry students

Objectives: Recent developmental frameworks suggest that dental curricula should focus not only on clinical skills but also non-clinical skills to provide an improvement in health care service.
The aim of this study was to evaluate a two-day workshop on leadership development for dental students and emphasize the necessity of nonclinical competencies in dental curricula.
Methods: We designed a two days leadership workshop for dental students in Alborz University of Medical Sciences.

The first day of the program was on course introduction,, difference between leadership and management, teamwork and self-leadership values. Day 2 was focused on creativity, leadership from communication perspective and presentation skills.
At the end of workshop participants were given a feedback sheet and asked to mention the most gainful, hardest and the most influential part of the workshop and rate the quality of each session as poor, average, good and perfect.
Results: 20 feedback sheets were gathered from all participants. All participants mentioned that the course has met their expectations and they evaluated it as a useful course. All sessions were also rated as good or perfect. For 13 out of 20 students the hardest part of the workshop was practicing team work and its related activities. Presentation skills was the most influential session for 9 students.
Conclusions: We believe that designing leadership developmental workshops create a unique opportunity for medical education in order to highlight areas of best practice and help change the attitude of today’s students into tomorrow’s leaders.
