Dental Caries, Sociodemographic Environment and Daily Habits in Babies Treated in a Dental Care Center of the Unified Health System in Brazil.

Objectives: The Unified Health System (SUS) in Brazil provides dental treatment for free. Dental Teaching Hospital of Federal University of Rio Grande do Sul (UFRGS) offers treatments funded by SUS at the UFRGS 'Center of Dental Specialties (CEO). Among other specialties, there is the “Baby Dental Care Clinic", where undergraduate students provide dental care to children from 0 to 36 months. The objective of this study is to present data related to the profile of the patients attended by SUS in Baby Dental Care Clinic.
Methods: Retrospective analysis of 319 patient records of babies born between 2004 and 2017 was performed. Data was analyzed in SPSS 23 software, using means and standard deviation, frequency tables and chi-square test.
Results: Regarding the sociodemographic profile of the patients, 52.7% were males and 47.3% were female, 76.4% were caucasian, 8.9% were black and 14.7% were brown. The mean age at the time of the first visit was 25.7 (SD 7.8) months and in 57.4% of the cases the reason for scheduling was dental caries. Concerning the oral health profile of the children, the mean dmft was 4.57 (SD 4.75) and 64.4% had caries activity. Cariogenic diet was presented in routine from 68.6% of the babies. Regarding the sociodemographic data, the variable "mother's schooling" was statistically associated with caries activity (p = 0.001) and caries experience (p = 0.001). Concerning children's habits, caries activity and caries experience were statistically associated with cariogenic diet (p = 0.0001) and breastfeeding overnight (p = 0.026).
Conclusions: This study demonstrates that children cared at the Baby Dental Care Clinic presented high dmft, caries activity and habits associated with caries disease. It is important that the dental treatment provided by SUS in secondary care be directed not only for curative treatment of the disease, but also for the encouragement of healthy habits.
