RETROSPECTIVE ANALYSIS ON SERVICE OF PATIENTS WITH SPECIAL NEEDS OF FACULTY OF DENTISTRY OF THE FEDERAL UNIVERSITY OF RIO GRANDE DO SUL-BRASIL.

Objectives: Assistance to patients with special needs comprises a wide spectrum of biases that configure this assistance with a highly specialized service. Dentistry is a key part of this context. Thus emerged the dental specialty that meets the needs of patients with special needs. The Faculty of Dentistry attends this part of the population through disciplines, extension projects and curricular internships. The purpose of this study is to evaluate the profile of patients with special needs at the Faculty of Dentistry of the Federal University of Rio Grande do Sul.
Methods: A retrospective epidemiological survey will be conducted, based on the information obtained by consulting the medical records of patients treated at the service. The study will be descriptive, longitudinal and retrospective. The data will be tabulated and analyzed from Excel spreadsheets. In relation to the analysis of the data, they will be expressed by means of relative and absolute frequencies.
Results: This study evaluated the records of 569 patients attended at the clinic of patients with special needs from January 2007 to December 2018. It was observed that the characteristic, when specified, more frequent condition that the patient needs special care is mental retardation (14.56%), followed by cerebral palsy (9.47%). The mean age group observed between the patients is around 29.9 years and the distribution between the sexes is relatively homogeneous.
Conclusions: The skills of the professional dental surgeon for the dental care of patients with special needs go far beyond pre-established protocols and techniques. They are patients who demand integral attention and a different look, as they will often present very diverse and complex clinical situations. In our study, we observed that the greatest demand is related to patients with mental retardation, evidencing the difficulty of the general clinical dentistry professional in dealing with this condition.
