Bond Strength of a New Multicolored Compomer to Primary Teeth

Objectives: It is mentioned that some children and parents prefer tooth-colored imperceptible dental restorations. However, other children enjoy selecting a colorful filling material for their primary teeth, if given the opportunity. Multi-colored compomers with glitter inclusion have appeared recently in pediatric dentistry. The purposes of the present study were: 1. to evaluate the shearbond strength (SBS) of a new multicolored compomer restorative material named Twinky Star (TS) (VOCO) to enamel and dentin of primary teeth. 2. to observe the micromorphology of the debonded surfaces and material-tooth interfaces. Methods: Buccal and lingual surfaces of ten extracted human primary molars were mounted in acrylic resin. The surfaces were ground to expose a flat enamel (n=10) and dentin surface (n=10). Cylindirical specimens of TS bonded to dentine and enamel surfaces according to the manufecturer recomandation. All specimens were stored in water for 24 hours prior to shear strength testing using Instron testing machine at a crosshead speed of 1 mm/minute. Paired comparison t test was used for statistical analysis. The debonded surfaces and material-tooth interfaces were prepared and examined under a scanning electron microscope (SEM). Results: The mean dentin and enamel SBS values (MPa) were 9.50 and 9.82. No significant difference was recorded in the SBS between the enamel and dentin (p>0.05). Adhesive and cohesive failure in tooth and material were recorded for two groups. Conclusion: TS was found successful adhesive restorative material in term of SBS on dentin and enamel of primary teeth.
