Clinical comparison of efficacy of two “paint-on” bleaching systems

Objectives: The aim of the study was to evaluate the efficacy of VivaStyle Paint On (Ivoclar Vivadent) bleaching system containing 6,3 % carbamide peroxide versus Simply White (Colgate) paint-on bleaching film containing 18% hydrogen peroxide. Methods: A total of 38 subject (aged 18-31) were randomized to one of two treatments. 20 individuals used the VivaStyle Paint On and 18 patients used the Simply White for 30 minutes, twice a day, per 14 days. The change of L*a*b* color parameters was assessed by use of a digital camera – Shadeanalyzer, designed for evaluating tooth color. A series of pictures of the central incisors was taken for each patient. The first picture was taken before bleaching, the second after seven days and the third after 14 days of treatment. Pictures were analyzed by the use of Shadeanalyzer software to reveal the L*a*b* values in relation to the Vita shade guide. Results: The statistical analysis of tooth color changes revealed a significantly higher (p<0,01) reduction of yellowness of the teeth (Δ b*=-0,5) and increase of their lightness (Δ L*=1,04) in the group using VivaStyle Paint On system compared with the group using Simply White paint-on film (Δ b*=-0,42, Δ L*=0,32) after 14 days of bleaching. Conclusion: 1. The VivaStyle Paint On bleaching system seems to be more effective than Simply White -self-applied bleaching film (OTC product). 2. The efficacy of the paint-on bleaching system depends not only on the concentration of the oxidizing agent but also on the composition of the product.
