Biocompatible Porous Titanium Coating for Oral Implantology Applications

Objectives: While analysing the literature, it was recognised that application of biocompatible coatings is the most promising way of improving biocompatibility of implants with simultaneous maintaining of their mechanical parameters. The purpose of this work is to investigate the corrosion resistance and the biocompatibility of new porous surface implants Methods: Five types of surface treatments, sintered microspheres porous titanium (porous Ti), titanium plasma spray (TPS), hydroxyapatite (HA), sandblasted and acid etched (SBAE), resorbable blast media, sandblasted with hydroxyapatite (RBM) were made. The corrosion potential, the corrosion current and the polarisation resistance was measured in artificial saliva. For biocompatibility evaluation MG63 osteoblast-like cells were used. Cell morphology, cell proliferation and total protein content and alkaline phosphatase activity (ALP) was evaluated after 2 hours, 2, 4 and 7 days. Results: Porous Ti and SBAE show a good corrosion resistance, with a weak current corrosion and a high polarisation resistance. Cell attachment, cell morphology, cell proliferation, and ALP activity were affected with a significant increase for porous coating (Ti porous). Conclusions: Based on these results, it can be suggested that Ti porous surface had significant better performances biological than the other coatings and an excellent electrochemical performances.
