Determination of TMJ Disorders by MRI and Computerized Axiography

Objectives: To compare Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) and computerized axiography in differential diagnosis of Temporomandibular Disorders (TMD).Methods:A total of 15 patients (14 females,1 male; 13-64 years old)with TMD and 10 healthy subjects were included in the study. MRI (Philips Interex 1.5 T),computerized axiography (Denar Cadiax Compact,Gamma Dental,Austria)and records were examined for the determination of Temporomandibular Joint (TMJ)derangements. The traces for all mandibular movements (open-close,lateral and protrusive)were examined. Results:MRI revealed an objective determination of the grades of internal derangements of TMJ.Deviations in pathways, shortened arches, rotations or crossings were observed in axiographic records of cases having intraarticular derangements while anterior disc displacements with and without reduction were observed in MR images of the patients. Conclusion:Computerized axiograhy is a newly developed method, thus it should be used in routine only after longitudinal clinical trials.Combined MRI and computerized axiography evaluations as well as clinical examinations should be considered for the determination of the grades of temporomandibular internal derangements.
