Chlor Compounds in The Prophylaxis Of Recurrent Aphthous Ulceration

Abstract: Objectives: Our purpose was to evaluate the effects of two different chlor compounds on recurrent aphthous ulceration (RAU). Method: An open preliminary study was performed on 30 RAS patients , 15 each group. None of these patients had aphthous ulcer at presentation. In the first group 0.1 % Chloramin-T and in the latter 0.2 % chlorhexidine gluconate were applied. In both groups the compounds were applied as mouthwashes twice a day for one minute. The follow-up period was three months and cytological smear examination of the buccal mucosa was done before and at the end of the study. Results: Aphthous ulcer formation did not occur clinically during this study in both groups. In cytological examination no statistically significant difference could be demonstrated in maturation index to examine the keratinization and oral flora between two groups. (p>0.05). Conclusion: Chloramin-T which is a swimming pool disinfectant has been used in the prophylaxis of recurrent aphthous ulceration since many years in our clinic. Chlorhexidine gluconate which is also a chlor compound was evaluated in this study. We have observed the same effect in both compounds in the prophylaxis of RAU. Our purpose was to prove the keratinization effect of chlor compounds in the prophylaxis of RAU. But in the cytological buccal mucosal smear examination keratinization was not observed. Further studies must be carried out to evaluate the mechanisms of chlor compounds in the prophylaxis of RAU.
