Neutrophil Functions and Periodontal Status in DM and Obese Patients

Objectives:The aim of this study was to evaluate the neutrophil functions and periodontal status of chronic periodontitis patients with Type II DM and obesity. Methods: Four groups were performed from 39 patients: 1)Type II DM and obese patients(8), 2)Tip II DM patients(12), 3)Obese patients(8), 4) Chronic periodontitis patients without any systemic disease(11). Periodontal status were diagnosed using full mouth pocket depth, pocket depth, PI, GI, measurements and panoramic radiographs. Feasting blood glucose and HbA1c values were used for DM diagnosis, and BMI index for obesity. Chemotaxis measurements were done by under-agarose technique and phagocytosis and inter-cellular killing were done using C.albicans. Blood samples were collected between 8:30-9:30 A.M. Anova ve Tukey tests were used for statistical analysis. Results: Type II DM-Obese and Type II DM groups had lower chemotaxis values than control group(p<0.05). Also pocket depth values of Type II DM-Obese and Type II DM groups were higher than the control group(p<0.05). However phagocytosis, intracellular killing and GI values did not show any difference between any of the groups. Conclusion: In the limits of this study, it can be said that Type II DM patients have chemotaxis defect and it is releated with the pocket depth values. But obesity does not seem to have a significant effect on any of the parameters evaluated.
