Effect of Flowable Composite on Bond Strength in Porcelain Repair

Objectives: The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effect of flowable composite which is applied between porcelain surface and composite resin in porcelain repair procedures. Methods: 40 feldspathic porcelain specimens were fired in metal ingots. Then they were sandblasted, etched and silanized. The specimens were divided into 4 groups (n=10). Group 1. Bonding (Single bond 3MESPE), Flowable composite (Aelite Flo LV, Bisco), Hybrid composite (Z-100 3MESPE), Group 2. Bonding (Single bond, 3MESPE) Hybrid composite (Z-100 3MESPE), Group 3. Bonding (One-Step, Bisco), Flowable composite (Aelite Flo LV, Bisco), Hybrid composite (Z-100 3MESPE). Group 4. Bonding (One-Step, Bisco), Hybrid composite (Z-100 3MESPE). 3MESPE (USA) and Bisco (USA) Porcelain Repair kits were used for porcelain repair. After storage in distilled water at 37ºC for 1 day, the specimens were subjective to shear bond testing at 0.50 mm/min with a universal testing machine. Statistical analysis of the data was accomplished by analysis of variance (ANOVA) and Fisher’s test. Results: The mean shear bond strength were as follow: Group 1; 14.9±3.66MPa, Group 2; 11.94±2.11MPa, Group 3: 15.03±4.34MPa, Group 4: 15.37±2.2MPa. Statistically differences exist between group 2 and 3, and also between group 2 and 4. No significant difference between group 1 and 2, and also between group 3 and 4. was observed. Conclusions: No effect has been found on the shear bond strength to porcelain when flowable composite was used for porcelain repair. Bisco repair kit indicated higher results (with or without flowable composite) than the 3MESPE repair kit without flowable composite. When flowable composite were used with 3MESPE, the increased bond strength values approached to the values of Bisco kit groups.
