Effect of a CHX – NaF mouthrinse on plaque re-growth

Objectives: The aim of this clinical study was to evaluate the inhibitory properties on plaque regrowth of a CHX – NaF - mouthrinse compared to two CHX mouthrinses and a negative control over 4 days in healthy subjects. Methods: This study was a randomized, double blind, 4 way cross-over study in 30 healthy subjects. Each of the four treatment periods lasted 4 days, separated by a 9-day washout period. All plaque was removed by the dentist before each period. During each period one of the following study products was used: CHX – NaF mouthrinse (0.2% CHX, 250 ppm F, GABA), or 0.2% CHX mouthrinse (GABA), or 0.2% CHX mouthrinse (Corsodyl®), or a negative control mouthrinse. From Day 1 to Day 4, the subjects used 10 ml of the allocated mouthrinse twice a day in the morning and in the evening at home. No use of any other form of oral hygiene was allowed. After 4 days the plaque scores were recorded. Results: There was statistically a less significant plaque regrowth after 4 days usage of the products containing chlorhexidinedigluconate (CHX-NaF mouthrinse, CHX mouthrinse or Corsodyl®) compared to the negative control mouthrinse. Between the products containing CHX there was no significant difference in plaque regrowth.

Conclusions: The results of this study indicate that the CHX-NaF mouthrinse is as effective on plaque regrowth inhibition as the CHX mouthrinse and the Corsodyl® mouthrinse while the placebo rinse has a significantly lower effect. However, no significant differences on plaque regrowth were observed between active treatments. Therefore we conclude, that the effect on plaque regrowth was not negatively influenced by the sodium fluoride in the formulation of the CHX NaF – mouthrinse.
