Evaluation of Depigmentation Using Different Laser Wavelengths : a Case Series

Objectives: To evaluate and compare the effectiveness of four types of laser wavelengths on gingival depigmentation.
Methods: A split mouth design was applied for four patients in this case series. Individuals in the present case series were uncomfortable from their gingival hyperpigmentation during speech and smiling, they were all medically free and denied taking any medications or smoking that may have caused this pigmentation .The mouth was divided into 4 quadrants , each quadrant denotes a group. Group 1 using : Er:Cr:YSGG 2780 nm, Group 2 : Diode 445 nm, Group 3 : Diode 940 nm, Group 4: Nd:YAG 1064 nm. The clinical assessment for these patients were melanin pigmentation index (MPI score 2) , bleeding and pain. These assessments were conducted at baseline, day 1-7-14
Results: The result of this case series showed that the use of the four types of laser wavelengths for depigmentation of the gingivae resulted in no edema , inflammation or bleeding with complete healing after two weeks
Conclusions: These four types of laser were shown to be safe, effective for gingival depigmentation and had an acceptable aesthetic results with maximum patient comfort. A longer follow up for the patient must be done to monitor the occurrence of regimentation.
