Objectives: The study aims to assess the social disparities in caries experience, tooth loss, oral hygiene and oral health related quality of life among Libyan adults.
Methods: A cross-sectional survey of Libyan adult dental patients attending public and private dental facilities in the city of Benghazi. The participants were asked to complete a self-administered questionnaire that covers sociodemographic, education level, income and oral hygiene behaviours, Oral Health impact Profile questionnaire (OHIP5). Clinical examination was conducted by calibrated and trained dentists in dental office. DMFT and OHI-s indices were used to examine dentition status and oral hygiene according to WHO criteria. Data was analysed using SPSS 25 and statistical tests were conducted at p-value more than or equals 0.05.
Results: A total of 416 dental patients were recruited. The majority of them were assessed in public dental facilities. The analysis showed lower numbers of decayed teeth, missing teeth, OHIS scores and OHIP5 scores were associated with higher education level and income (p-value more than 0.05). highly educated participants were more likely to know and use dental floss and also more likely to brush their teeth regularly and restore their teeth (p-value more than0.05).
Conclusions: The study demonstrated social gradient in oral health behaviours , caries, tooth loss and oral hygiene and quality of life impacts.
