Development and Psychometric Properties Arabic Version of Dental Neglect Scale (DNS)

Objectives: This study aims to cross-culturally adapt the English version of DNS to Arabic culture and to test its psychometric properties among Libyan adults.
Methods: The original DNS was translated into the Arabic language according to international guidelines. The developed Arabic DNS was assessed for semantic equivalence and face and content validity among 15 participants. The psychometric properties of Arabic DNS were examined among 416 Libyan dental patients aged 18-70 years (female 249, male 167). The participants completed questionnaires including demographic information, perceived oral health, oral health value scale, Arabic DNS, Oral health-related quality of life, and oral health literacy. Simplified oral hygiene index and caries experience using the DMFT index were performed among all participants. Statistical to examine hypotheses related to discriminating validity, internal consistency, test–retest reliability and floor and ceiling effects were conducted using SPSS 25 at a p-value of 0.05.
Results: The Arabic DNS was successfully and smoothly developed. It showed an acceptable level of equivalence to the original version, and reliability with an overall Cronbach's Alpha of 0.62. Deleting any of the items showed no improvement in Cronbach's Alpha All hypotheses predefined to test construct validity were confirmed. The bivariate correlation between and other health indicators shows a significant positive correlation between DNS and DMFT, OHIS and oral health-related quality of life (p=0.000). On the other hand, statistically significant negative correlations were observed between DNS and oral health value scale(p=0.000), and Floor or ceiling effects were not observed.
Conclusions: The Arabic DNS was shown to be a valid and reliable tool to assess oral health values in the Arabic-speaking population.
