Facial bio-banking, personal and medical recording… The Future

Objectives: This study aimed to Implement and evaluate the concept of facial banking for face morphology using affordable face scanning technologies. To compare the reliability and feasibility of different affordable technologies used for data acquisition to the generated 3D facial model and being compared to the CBCT imaging.
Methods: One healthy adult volunteer with normal face form was scanned by different (3D) imaging technologies using Planmeca 3D imaging unit (Reference scan) (n=1), Rayface facial scanner (Group A)((n=10) and photogrammetry (Group B)(n=10) to generate 3D face models. The 3D generated models were exported as STL files and evaluated by allowing quantification of the analyzed data and compared to compared to the reference scan as well as amongst by using reverse engineering software Geomagic control X.
Results: There were statistically significant differences between the reference model (CBCT) and both of the test models (Rayface facial sanner and photogrammetry). Although there was no statistically significant difference between the Rayface group and the photogrammetry group, both groups reported accepted outcomes for facial bio-banking.
Conclusions: To build 3D facial models that accurately reflect a person's fundamental facial morphology, face scans can be produced utilizing a variety of technologies. 2D photographs were found to be an adequate data to record face form, however, the emergence of low-cost methodologies to register and document 3D face form showed a more added value for face registration. Therefore, 3D facial banking concept demonstrates an effective medical and dental data recording.
