Rehabilitation of feeding disabilities in complete unilateral cleft lip and palate neonates

Objectives: The Purpose of this study is to evaluate the prosthetic rehabilitation of feeding disabilites in neonates born with complete unilateral cleft lip and palate using two different appliances materials .
Methods: twelve newborn infants with unilateral complete cleft lip and palate (non- syndromic) were included in this study. the infants recieved a soft vinyle feeding appliance for two weeks then a hard nasoalveolar molding appliance was started after that for almost 3 monthes .The gardians were instructed to register the duration of the feeding in two situations with a fixed amount of milk (30 ml) for each appliance and data were collected , tabulated and statistically analyzed using spss 22.
Results: There was statistically significant difference between the use of the soft and hard appliances in the rehabilitation of feeding disability in neonates with CUCLP (p<0.001*).
Conclusions: The use of the soft appliance facilitated the introduction of bottle feeding from day 1 and made it easy for the parents to start feeding their infants as the appliance was delivered within an hour , on the other hand the hard nasoalveolar appliance was more effecient in feeding as it made a hard surface against which suckling was better and it was used in molding the alveolar gap in the cleft babies too .
