Metagenomics and its Contributions to Dental Research

Objectives: Present the principles and foundations of DNA sequencing technologies and their advantages in the analysis of physiology and pathological conditions.
Describe the application of metagenome sequencing in the study of periodontal bacteria involved in coronary artery disease.
Present experimental evidence of the use of sequencing tools and genomic analysis applied to the characterization of biofilm in root caries.
Methods: Metagenomics is the study of the genetic material of a community of organisms in their natural conditions; it generates data on the contribution of microorganisms in human physiology and how microbial dysbiosis is associated with disease. Advances in the instruments and techniques to analyse nucleic acids and the reduction of costs have made it possible to obtain massive amount of genetic data. Robust computational capacity and experience are required to gather biologically relevant information. Metagenomics is being applied to understand the microbiota in health and, pathologies such as caries and periodontal disease.
Problematic Due to the accelerated evolution of approaches based on omics sciences, it is important for dentists to know the technical details of sample processing and the bioinformatic tools necessary to understand the findings of metagenomics and comprehensively address oral diseases or systemic health problems modified by the oral microbiome.
Results: Academic impact An update will be given on the importance of metagenomics in the study of the oral microbiome and its role in health and disease.

Essential results To understand how nucleic acid sequencing technologies work, the bioinformatic analysis associated and how to interpret the findings in a specific oral health problem.
Conclusions: The impact of the study of oral microbiota by metagenomics to understand oral health and disease conditions and systemic associated conditions.
