Age and sex Estimation Through the Study of Histomorphometric Characteristics of Dental Cementum

Objectives: To evaluate the morphology of the cementum of the middle third of the root in relation to age and sex in individuals from the Metropolitan Area of the Aburrá Valley, Antioquia, Colombia.
Methods: This study was approved by the Bioethics Committee of the Faculty of Dentistry, University of Antioquia. It had a convenience sample (n=127 teeth) of men and women between 15 and 47 years of age, mainly made up of third molars, which were evaluated by means of cementochronological, histomorphometric and image analysis. Pearson's correlation coefficient (r) was applied to examine the association between age-related variables. An unpaired t-test and univariate and multivariate discriminant analyses were applied to determine the differences between sex categories.
Results: In third molars, the middle third of the root is composed of acellular cementum and mixed cementum. The estimated chronological age showed moderate to strong positive significant correlations with respect to cementum band width, incremental line count and cementum surface area. Using cement dimensions, a mean percentage of correct prediction of 66.10% was obtained by discriminant analysis.
Conclusions: Although the analysis of histomorphometric characteristics of human dental cementum from the middle third of the root canal may not be very beneficial for age estimation, it could be useful for sex estimation.
