Adhesive Performance Of Two Universal Adhesives To Dentin
Objectives: To evaluate by microtensile bond strength (µTBS) and SEM, the adhesive effectiveness to dentin, of two universal adhesives used in the etch-and-rinse (ER) and the self-etch (SE) mode.
Methods: Following the ISO / TS 1140 standards and of the Ethics Committee, 18 molars of people between 20 and 23 years, extracted for orthodontic reasons and kept for four months were used.
Flat surfaces were generated in mid-coronal dentin and wet-grinding with 1000 grit SiC paper for 15s The applied adhesives were: Single Bond 2 (3M ESPE) as control (n = 10), universal adhesives Optibond Versa (Kerr) and XP Bond (Dentsply) under etch-and-rinse and self-etching modes. Filtek Z350 XT (3M ESPE) were polymerized on treated dentin surface with incremental technique. They were stored at 37 ° C for 24h and sectioned by Isomet, until have resin–dentine beams (n = 10) of 0.83 mm2 by 10 mm randomly chosen under 9.39% coefficient of variation which were subjected to µTBS in Instrom 0.5 mm / min. The failures were evaluated in stereo-microscope 80x. The dentin was dissolved with HCl acid for 24h in 2 self-etch samples and observed by SEM.
Results: Data were analyzed with ANOVA and Wilcoxon tests (p <0.05).There was significant difference between the groups with etch-and-rinse and self-etch strategy and between universal adhesives. The lower µTBS values was the XP Bond (33.04 MPa) in self-etching mode and higher values was the Optibond Versa (56.85 MPa) with etch-and-rinse strategy. The most frequent failures were adhesive.
Conclusions: The etch-and-rinse mode of a universal adhesive, improves the µTBS to dentine. The type of failure and interaction with dentin it depends of bonding modes.
