Dental Care Of The Pregnant Patient. Systematic Review.
Objectives: Generate recommendations for the National University of Colombia School of Dentistry, through a systematic review. Methods: The questions that set the review with PICO components were: ¿Pregnant women in the last trimester who need dental attention, are there any physiological alterations when are attended at semi-sitting position or supine position? ¿Pregnant women who need dental X rays, are there any pregnancy alterations compared with those who don't need dental x rays? From the questions that guided the systematic review, the descriptor terms “Mesh” or “DeCS” were defined in the database (Pubmed, Embase and Scielo). For each question there were established the eligibility criteria for the articles: Year of publication, language, type of study and full text availability. The articles were evaluated with the evaluation system SIGN to establish evidence levels. The recommendations were made based on the classification of qualified evidence. Results: After applying the eligibility criteria for the question on the patient´s position 425 items were found, the selection according to title, abstract, full text availability and quality of evidence was made, 6 items were evaluated, and of these 2 were randomized clinical trials, 3 case series and 1 case report. On the question of X-rays 7 items were selected, all were narrative reviews, textbooks and experts opinions. Two recommendations on the use of x-rays in dentistry and one on the position of the pregnant patient in dentistry were developed. Conclusions: From the evidence found can be assumed that the ideal position for the pregnant patient in dental care is semi-sitting. The use of x-rays in pregnant patients should be properly justified and keep to a minimum, however, the state of pregnancy is not a contraindication for taking dental radiographs.
