POSSIBLE ASSOCIATION OF CRANIOFACIAL CHARACTERISTIC IN PARENTS AND RISK OF NON SINDROMIC CLEFT LIP PALATE IN THEIR CHILDREN IN COLOMBIAN POPULATION.

Objectives: Several studies suggest that craniofacial phenotype may be a predisposing factor for non-syndromic cleft lip palate (NSCLP) in their offspring. The objective of this study was To identify craniofacial differences between parents of children with NSCLP and unrelated controls.
Methods: Facial photographs and posteroanterior radiographs of 428 (228 parents of children with NSCLP and 200 parents of control group) from three cities in Colombia (Bogota, Cartagena and Pasto) were analyzed by cephalometrics measurements and facial proportions. This study was approval by ethical committee of Dentistry faculty of Pontificia Universidad Javeriana. All parameters were compared between NSCLP parents and control (for mothers and fathers separately)
Results: In the facial and radiographic analysis of the total study population it was identified that a middle third increased is a factor of risk to their children (p-value = 0.021 OR = 1.695). The Parents of children with NSCLP in the Cartagena population demonstrated an increased in a middle third (p:0,007; OR= 2,152), lower third (p=0,031; OR=1,629) and intercanthal distance (p=0.002; OR= 2.72), was a predictor of NSCLP factor in their children. The analysis of facial and cephalometric measures of parents from Bogotá and Pasto showed no significant findings.
Conclusions: The presence of phenotypic characteristics in parents could be related with NSCLP phenotype in their children.
