5-year assessment of biological complications around implants with different platforms and macro designs. A retrospective study with 497 implants

Objectives: The aim of this study was to assess a 5-year prevalence of biological complications around implants with different platforms and macro designs.
Methods: Patients treated with osseointegrated implants (Implacil De Bortoli®, Sao Paulo, Brazil) at FUNDECTO (USP), from 1998 to 2008, were included in this study. Inclusion criteria also presented all the prostheses in function for five or more years. For further analysis, data were obtained regarding implant’s platform and implant’s macro design.
Results: From the 497 implants evaluated, 357 were external hexagon and 140 were internal hexagon. Regarding the macro design, 409 were cylindrical and 88 were tapered. Considering the prevalence of peri-implantitis, it was observed that 9.2% (n=33) and 6.4% (n=9) of external and internal hexagon implants presented the disease (p=0.466), respectively. When evaluating the macro design, it was seen that 8.3% (n=34) and 9.1% (8) of cylindrical and tapered implants presented peri-implantitis (p=0.164), respectively. Considering the other analyses (Table 1) there was no statistical significance. For statistical analyses, Pearson chi-square test was used.
Conclusions: According to this study, biological complications are not related with implant platform neither with implant macro design
