Oral health meaning in promotion applied to scholar population
Objectives: Compare the meaning of oral health (OH) between theory and practice in oral health promotion (OHP) on children, between 4 and 12 years old, programs to make an oral health definition with health promotion and social determinants perspective and give recommendations for practice.
Methods: This is a retrospective study based on the articles published in 8 databases, using the MESH terms AND < intervention > AND < school> as key word. Four articles were selected after standards of inclusion and exclusions, which were subject to two stages of analysis: in the first one, 36 dichotomous variables were analysed taking into account the central aspects of the international conferences of health promotion and the approach of social determinants of health; in the second, the selected interventions were typified and confronted in order to infer about the meaning of oral health implemented, answering the research question: What is the meaning of oral health in the implementation of OHP programs in scholar population?
Results: Taking into account the areas of intervention in the international health promotion conferences it is evident an approach focused on personal skills, health systems and healthy environments. As well as, educational activities and the provision of healthcare services, composed by preventive and clinical activities with fluoride application are the central topic applied the most on interventions activities. Regarding the social determinants of health, the approach is addressed to the structural and intermediates determinants approach.
Conclusions: The preventive and promotional approach is widely misunderstood by the promotion of health programs. In general, it has limited to clinical, preventive, educational and anti-cariogenic activities, which demonstrates the use of the concept of oral health from the disease view and postponed the pursuit of wellbeing.
