Clinical performance of different adhesive techniques for restoration of noncarious cervical lesions

Objectives: To evaluate the clinical performance of noncarious cervical lesions (NCCLs) restorations of resin composite and resin-modified glass-ionomer cements using four different adhesive techniques
.
Methods: This randomized clinical trial included fifty patients (18-70 year-old) selected at the university center (FOA-UNESP). Two hundred restorations were randomly divided into to four groups: (G1) Scotchbond Universal Adhesive/Filtek Supreme Ultra Universal following a self-etch approach (SU-SE); (G2) Scotchbond Universal Adhesive/Filtek Supreme Ultra Universal performing selective phosphoric acid-etching of enamel cavity margins (SU-SEet); (3) Vitremer following manufacturer’ instruction (VT) ; (4) Vitremer pre-treating with EDTA (0.1M, pH 7.4) for 60s (VT-ED). Baseline and 6-month evaluations of the restorations were made with Modified United States Public Health Service (USPHS) criteria, by two examiners with kappa values of 0.89 and 0.94 for both periods respectively. Statistical analyses were performed with two-way repeated measures analysis of variance by ranks (α = 0.05).

Results: All patients returned after 6 months. Only three restorations (1 from each SU-SE, SU-SEet, VT) were lost after 6 months (p > 0.05). There was no statistically significant difference between the different adhesive techniques at baseline and after 6 months. Regardless of the group, statistically significant differences were found for marginal integrity, surface texture and color matching criteria, between the baseline and after 6 months.
Conclusions: After 6 months of evaluation, the different adhesive techniques for restoration of NCCLs achieved similar clinical performance.
