Application of thoracic flap in reconstruction of maxillofacial defect
PURPOSE: This study aims to use thoracic flap to reconstruct the defect of maxillofacial soft tissue and to improve the life quality of the patient. METHODS: 17 cases of soft tissue defect in maxillofacial region, caused by various disease, were collected during 2003-2006. The age of these patients ranged from 29-71 years (48.4 in average), the ratio of male to female was 12:5. The lateral thoracic flap or combined with the scapular flap were applied to reconstruct the defect of soft tissue or/and bone tissue. RESULTS: All the flaps survived except one case which presented as necrosis of the epidermis resulting from the too fine of the artery. After 3-32 months' follow up, the morphology of the reconstructed region was satisfied, and the scar in donate site was hideous. CONCLUSIONS: The application of thoracic flap is better to improve the life quality of the patient compared with the other free flaps traditionally used in clinic, and this donate site is recommended.
