Methods: Sixty-four pure titanium implants were coated by polylactide (PLA) and divided into four groups, and each group included sixteen ones. 1mg rhBMP or the combination of 1mg rhBMP-2 and 200ng rhFGF-b or 250ng rhIGF-I were applied and lyophilizated into three groups respectively. The forth group as control one received only buffered saline without any growth factors. Four implants including one of each group were placed into bilateral femur bones of sixteen adult long-ear rabbits. The Rabbits were killed at 12 weeks after implants placement. The implant-bone samples were measured the fixation strength by using pull-out test.
Results: the fixation strength of groups with rhBMP-2 was greater than the control(p<0.05), and group of rhBMP-2/rhIGF-I/PLA and rhBMP-2/rhFGF-b/PLA greater than the group used rhBMP-2 only (p<0.05). But there was no great difference between the rhBMP-2/rhIGF-I/PLA and rhBMP-2/rhFGF-b/PLA groups.
Conclusions: Combined applications of rhBMP-2/rhFGF-b or rhBMP-2/rhIGF-I promote the fixation strength of implant-bone surface.
