Color characteristics of upper anterior teeth in elderly Chinese people

Objectives: To investigate color characteristics of upper anterior teeth in elderly Chinese people. Methods: 100 elderly Chinese people, ranging from 60 to 90 years with a mean of 67.5 years in ages, were collected in the study. The color matches were done for each of upper anterior teeth by ShadeEye-NCC (Shofu, Japan) colorimeter. L*a*b* values were recorded. Results: The mean values of L*a*b* were 71.55, -0.63, 16.34 for 11, and those were 69.48, -0.33, 14.18 for 12, while those were 68.32, -0.011, 19.75 for 13 respectively. There was significant difference in chromatism among these anterior teeth (p<0.05). The L* values were 11, 12, 13, a* values were 13, 12, 11 and b* values were 13, 11, 12 in descending order. Conclusions: The upper anterior teeth in elderly Chinese people were to turn red yellowish and dark. The Hue of upper anterior teeth decreased from 11 to 13. However, 12 was slightly more bluish than 11.
