Objectives: To study the relationship between damage of oxygen free radical and Recurrent Aphthous Ulcer (RAU), and to evaluate the therapeutic effects of Tea Polyphenols (TP) on RAU. Methods: RAU models were established by injecting antigens into SPRAGUE-DAWLY rats. 40 RAU rats were divided five groups randomly including control group, ulcer cataplasm group and three TP therapeutic groups. The evaluation of the damage of oxygen free radical was determined by the serum superoxide dismutase (SOD), malondialdehyde (MDA) and glutathine peroxidease (GSH-PX). Results: Compared with normal group, the level of serum SOD, MDA and GSH-PX all changed significantly in RAU rats (P<0.01). Furthermore, these values showed more distinctive in TP therapeutic groups than negative control group (P<0.05). Conclusions: SOD, MDA and GSH-PX values are suitable to evaluate the damage of oxygen free radical. It showed a close relationship between the damage of oxygen free radical and RAU incidence. The ability of resisting the damage of oxygen free radical and lipid peroxidation in TP helps to its therapeutic effects on RAU rats in this experiment.
