Clinical and radiological features of 15 glandular odontogenic cyst cases

Objective: To analyse the clinical and radiological features of glandular odontogenic cyst (GOC). Methods: Clinical and radiological features of 15 cases GOCs in stomatology of Wuhan university were analysed , the literature was reviewed. Results: There were 12 (80%) males and 3 (20%) females with a male—to—female ratio of 4:1. Ages ranged from 21 to 59 years (mean 32.6) with a peak in the second (46.7%) and third (33.3%) decades. 9 cases occurred in the maxilla, 6 cases in the mandible. Our study found that GOC is prevalent in younger males and in the maxilla in Chinese (12/15). Radiographically, 12 lesions were unilocular and 3 lesions were multilocular. 86.7%(13/15) showed well-defined borders. 80%(12/15) showed cortical plate expansion. 20% showed perforation. Root resorption was found in 40% of patients. 6 lesions contained one or more tooth which supported that GOC is odontogenic origin. Conclusions: GOC demonstrates clinical and radiographic features of a odontogenic cyst with high recurrence. A more aggressive surgical removal rather than simple curettage was suggested and cases should be carefully followed up.
