Whitening and extrinsic stain removal efficacy of a dual-phase dentifrice
Objectives: To evaluate the extrinsic stain removal and the whitening benefit of a sodium hexametaphosphate containing dual-phase dentifrice (Crest® Vivid White) relative to an experimental powered toothbrush or a 18% carbamide peroxide based paint-on gel (Colgate® Simply White). Methods: Three clinical studies were independently conducted at 3 different study sites involving a total of 78 healthy adults for 2 weeks. One study compared the extrinsic stain removal efficacy of the dual-phase dentifrice used with a manual toothbrush versus a powered toothbrush used with a standard dentifrice involving approximately one third of the subjects, while the other two studies evaluated the tooth color change of the dual-phase dentifrice relative to the paint-on gel. Extrinsic stain removal was evaluated on the anterior teeth by a dental examiner using Lobene stain index. Tooth color was measured objectively on the maxillary teeth utilizing digital imaging analysis, and a meta-analysis was performed on the pooled raw data from the tooth color studies. Results: Both the dual-phase dentifrice and the powered toothbrush exhibited statistically significant (P<0.05) stain reduction after 2-week of use. The median percent stain removal for the dual-phase dentifrice and the powered toothbrush was 90% and 88% respectively. With respect to tooth color change, the dual-phase dentifrice had -0.16 unit Db*(yellowness) shift, represented a directional improvement relative to the paint-on gel (-0.04). There was no statistically significant difference between the test products. All test products were well tolerated over the 2-week treatment period. Conclusions: The research demonstrated that the dual-phase dentifrice provides extrinsic stain removal and tooth whitening efficacy at a similar level to a powered toothbrush and paint-on gel.
