The study of EOIPlan system for orbital implant surgery

Objectives: The optimal positioning of orbital implant can improve and accelerate the rehabilitation process and avoid complications. The purpose of this study was to establish a computer-assisted design system for predictable preoperative planning of orbital implant surgery, and to determine the optimal number and position of orbital implants to be inserted. Methods: The developed system was composed of Spiral CT Scanner (GE LightSpeed Ultra), an intel Pentium ‡W computer with high-resolution color video card (GeForce4 MX 5200). Ease Orbital Implant Planning System(EOIPlan), the interactive software for predictable surgical planning of orbital implants placement, was developed at Shanghai East Hospital of Tongji University and the lab of Pattern Analysis and Machines Intelligence (Shanghai Jiaotong University). It is based on GE AW4.0 workstation, Voxtool3.0, ezDICOM1.6 and Xiphoid DICOM. The software was developed using programming Visual C++ and Windows XP system. Three patients (two with left orbital defects and one with bilateral orbital defects) were scanned using GE CT Scanner. The axial scan images were input into the EOIPlan system to analyze the structure of orbital bones, and decide the position of implants and mimic implant surgery. Results: The analysis and implant mimicking in 3 patients with orbital defect have been clinically realized by the developed system based on SCT technique and computerized digital image processing technology. Conclusion: The developed EOIPlan system superiorly assisted abilities for preoperative surgical planning of orbital implants placement, it was easier, more accuract and more likely to be based on the best available data.
