Garlic effects on bacteriostasis and detoxification in oral field
Objective: In order to apply the common traditional Chinese medicine garlic in oral field. Methods: The eight representative oral species (58 strains) of streptococcus (9), Peptococcus (4), Lactobacilluse (6), Actinomyces (3), Veillonella (10), Porphyromonas (12), Provotella (3), Fusobacterium (11) to garlic juice were systematically studied by classical tube susceptibility test. The periodontitis involved roots (6) were cut in halves, the half roots were treated by garlic juice for 5 minutes, the other half roots were treated by normal saline solution with same method as control. The attachment of cultured L-fibroblasts to the treated root surface was observed under electron scanning microscope. Results: The minimal inhibitory concentration of the most above oral pathogens (87.93%) to garlic juice was 1:64~1:512. Garlic juice could increase attachment of L-fibroblasts to the treated root surface. Conclusion: It revealed that garlic juice poccessed strong bacteriostasis of oral bacteria and could cause root detoxification and reestablishment of biological adaption. The application of garlic is worthy developing in oral field.
