Expression of HOX C13 in Odontogenic lesions

Objectives: To study the expression of HOX C13 mRNA in odontogenic lesions. Methods: HOX C13 mRNA was examined in 47 cases of ameloblastoma (AB), 3 cases of calcifyinodontogenic cation epithelium cyst (COC), 3 cases of ameloblastic fibroma (AF) and 2 cases of calcifying epithelial odontogenic tumor (CEOT) by in situ hybridization. 10 cases of odontogenic keratocyst (OKC), and 7 cases of normal oral mucosa were selected as control. Results: HOX C13 mRNA expressed positively in all odontogenic epithelium except of AF. The positive ratios were 97.9% (46/47) in AB, 100% (3/3) in COC, 100% (2/2) in CEOT, 70.0% (7/10) in OKC epithelium and 42.9% (3/7) in the normal oral mucosa. There was prominent difference among AB, OKC and normal mucosa (x2=21.665, P=0.001). Conclusion: The occurrence and development of the odontogenic tumors showed relation to the high expression of HOX C13. The expression of HOX C13 mRNA in odontogenic lesions had heterogeneity, which could improve the epithelial proliferation, inhibit the end differentiation of amenloblasts, and its loss may lead to the cornification and degeneration of epithelial cells.
