Retreatment of resorcinol-formaldehyde resin endodontic therapy
Objectives: The purpose of this study was to evaluate the quality of treatment and incidence of flare-ups when teeth with resorcinol-formaldehyde resin are treated in endodontic linic. Methods: Seventy-four cases of retreatment of resorcinol-formaldehyde therapy in one year were included in this study. The record was included preoperative condition, periodontal condition of tooth, the quality of root canal treatment, and the relation between above variable affecting flare-ups. Results: After retreatment, obturations were rated as acceptable filling in 46%, underfilling in 40% and overfilling in 15%. Nine patients (12%) had post-retreatment flare-ups. No statistical difference in the incidence of flare-ups was found in cases with pre-existing periradicular radiolucencies compared to cases with normal periradicular appearance, symptomatic cases compared to asymptomatic cases, or cases with acceptable fillings after retreatment compared to less than underfilling and overfilling cases. Conclusions: It was concluded that the quality of retreatment teeth with resorcinol-formaldehyde fillings needs be improved, and a higher than normal incidence of flare-ups may occur.
