Compomers prepared by methacryloyloxyethyl-succinate and their physical-mechanical properties

Objectives: The preparation of compomers by an alternative acid monomer and evaluation of the physical and mechanical properties for these compomers. Methods: Four experimental compomers were made with the acid monomer and one commercial compomer (Dyract) was used as control. The compressive strength (CS), flexural strength (FS), flexural elastic modulus and diametral tensile strength (DTS) were determined by using universal testing machine after 24 h, 1, 2 and 4 weeks of water storage at 37°C. The water sorption of these materials was determined with time. The degree of conversion (DC) of the compomers was determined by using an FT-Raman spectrometer. The results were analyzed and compared using one-way ANOVA with TUKEY's test at the significance level of 0.05. Results: The experimental compomers showed comparable mechanical properties with Dyract, but higher water sorption. And the DC of the experimental compomers was higher than that of the controlled compomer. The mechanical properties of the compomers showed a good relationship with the DC, and water sorption of the compomers. Conclusions: The experimental acid monomer could potentially be used as an alternative monomer for compomer.
