A comparative study of herbs on halitosis

Objective: To evaluate the possibility and efficiency of Chinese herbs as a new drug for preventing and treating Halitosis. Methods: Extracted efficient substance from Chinese herbs were identified by sulfur gases, volatile sulphur compounds (VSCs) producing tests by Halimeter and antimicrobial sensitivity tests performed on 96 microwell plate. Results: 14 extracts from plants showed efficient inhibition on VSCs created by microorganism from patient. Their VSCs was 23.75 to 75.5ppb, including Coptis Rhizome(Coptis Chinensis Rhizoma)(by Botanical Name), et al. Sea Weed(Sargassum Pallidum Herba), Ampelopsis Root(Ampelopsis Radix), Lycium Fruit(Lycium Barbarum Fructus), Herba(Hedyotis Diffusae Hedyotis diffusa Willd) and Isatis Leaves(Isatis Tinctoria Folium) showed a little effect, whose VSCs was from 103 to 119.5 ppb. It was also found that Moutan root bark(Moutan Cortex Radix), Honeysuckle Flower(Lonicera Japonica Floss), Isatis Root(Isatidis Tinctoria Radix), Cirsium Root(Cirsium Japonicum Radix), Chrysanthemum Flower(Chrysanthemum Morifolium Flos), Agrimony(Agrimonia Pilosa Herba), Gallnut (cocoon) of Chinese Sumac(Rhus Chinese's Galla), and Coptis Rhizome(Coptis Chinensis Rhizoma) showed best effect against microorganism, with the percent of inhibition at 70% to100%. There was no correlation between the inhibition of VSCs and their bacteria sensitivity. Conclusion: Chinese herbs, Coptis Rhizome etc, are efficient agents for halitosis inhibition.
