Temporomandibular Disorder Following BSSRO Versus Combined Operative Procedure

Objectives: In this study, positional condylar changes that occur after BSSRO and combined operative procedure(SSRO + IVRO) in patients with mandibular asymmetry are radiographically documented and correlated withTMD. Secondly, a new three dimensional analyzing system to evaluate a morphological abnormalities of the cephalon will be introduced. Methods: Eleven consecutive patients who underwent BSSRO(Group A) and thirteen who underwent combined operative procedure (SSRO+IVRO)(Group B), had axial cephalograms (standardized submentovertex radiographs) made before surgery, immediately after surgery, 3months and more than 6 months postoperatively. Constructed lines and formed angles in the transverse plane such as condylar angulation(CA) were examined. Results: Analysis of the data showed skeletal stability and improvement of TMD in both groups. Degree of TMD makedly reduced in GroupB. Conclusion: The study concluded that combined operative procedure(SSRO + IVRO) was clinically accepted and significantly effective to reduce TMD in the case of mandibular asymmetry.
