Clinical Evaluation on Efficacy and Safety of a Whitening Strips

Tooth whitening procedures have been widely used in dental treatment and consumer home treatment. Recently a novel Whitening strips manufactured by P&G has been merged into the market, which increases tooth whitening choices and customer satisfactions. These whitening strips contain 6% hydrogen peroxide in glycerin/carbopol substrate with total 9-13 mg of hydrogen peroxide on each strip. Objectives: This study is to evaluate the efficacy and safety of the novel CWS. Method: This was a single blind study. Ten volunteers were entered into the clinical study. The subjects were instructed to wear whitening strips on their maxillary anterior teeth for 30 minutes, twice a day. Totally 28 strips were used. Photos were taken before the treatment, 7 days and 14 days after the treatment by using Digital Imaging Analysis (DIA) equipment. Data were analysized, compared and summarized in the L, a* and b* color system. Results: The results showed that after 7 days and 14 days treatment, the average b (yellowness) value decreased by 1.96 and 2.54; the average L value (brightness) increased by 1.50 and 2.04 respectively. The treatment was well-tolerated and only one subject had transit mild tooth sensitivity. There were no subjects discontinue the treatment during the study. Conclusion: These results demonstrate that the novel whitening strips containing 6% hydrogen peroxide have significant tooth whitening efficacy in both 7 days (14 strips) and 14 days (28 strips) usage. Consumers can safely and conveniently apply these whitening strips.
