Study on preparation and application of nano-whisker-reinforced dental resin composites

Objectives: Recent studies showed that the addition of ceramic whisker significantly reinforced resin composites. The aim of the present study was to use a silicon dioxide(SiO2)-whisker particle mixture to reinforce resin composite, and change the properties of resin composite utilizing dimension and strengh of wisker and its ability to attach the surfaces of nano-particle of SiO2 after fusion. Methods: We investigated the variation of chemo-structure of nano-SiO2-¦Á-Si3N4 wisker surface between 500°æ and 1100°æ; activated. the surface of nano-SiO2-¦Á-Si3N4 wisker by hydrogen peroxide solution, strong sulfuric acid and treated its surface using KH-570 ;and screened the ratio of SiO2 and ¦Á-Si3N4, temperature and time of fusion and attachment, SiO2-reinforced¦Á-Si3N4 wisker fusion composite; and assessed chemo-physics, mechanical function and biological mark applying ADA and State Pharmaceutical Administration standard. Results: The resin composites with a whisker:silica mass ratio of 2:1, with fusing the silica particles onto the whiskers in air for 30 min at a temperature of 800°æ,and with resin matrix with 70% filler, had the best chemo-physics, mechanical function and biological mark. In conclusion, nano- SiO2-¦Á-Si3N4 wisker resin composites is a new kind of resin composites which has better comprehensive property than others. Conclusions:Whisker-reinforced dental resin composites is a new type of material to restore the defection of tooth and dentition.
