Long-term Result of the Treatment of Bruxism with Occlusal Splints

Objective: To treat bruxism with different kinds of occlusal splint and observe the long-term result. Methods: 132 cases of bruxism were treated with different kinds of occlusal splint and the clinic results were followed-up for 1 to 2 years. Improved stabilization splint was used for the treatment of centric bruxism ; canine protected splint was used for the treatment of ecentric bruxism ( anterior teeth- type); laterotrusive protected splint was used for the treatment of ecentric bruxism ( posterior teeth-type); and, improved laterotrusive protected splint was used for the treatment of ecentric bruxism (mixed teeth-type). The patient, who is under 16 years old, was advised not to be treated until the occlusion establishment of the second molar is completed. And the patient, who has the symptom and sign of tempromandibular disorders (TMD) , was advised at first to be treated for TMD and then be treated for bruxism with occlusal splint. All the patients, who were treated with occlusal splints, were asked to use occlusal splints at least for one year. Results: The effective rate of the treatment of bruxism with occlusal splint is 100%, the cure rate of bruxism is 37.9%, and the relapse rate is 2.3%. Conclusion: Bruxism can be effective treated with occlusal splint and the result of the treatment is satisfied.
