Asymptomatic Apical Periodontitis a Microbiological Assay

Title: Asymptomatic Apical Periodontitis a Microbiological Assay Purpose: Determined the microbiologic flora associated with asymptomatic apical periodontitis and compared it with the literature. Methods: 22 patients with primary endodontic infection diagnosed as asymptomatically apical periodontitis (AAP) seek for treatment at the Dental School University of Chile from October 2010 to June 2011.A basal microbiological sample was taken before treatment under total isolation conditions. The samples were obtained by Shimauchi H method. The samples were processed by polymerase chain reaction (PCR) and classical microbiological culture. The selected bacteria were Prevotella intermedia (Pi) Porphyromonas gingivalis ( Pg), Porphyromonas endodontalis (Pe), y Prevotella nigrescens (Pn). After the samples all patients were endodontically treated. Results: Full samples were only obtained for 20 patients. PCR results were: for Pi 4 patient were positive (20%). For Pg, 5 patients were positive (25%). For Pe 8 patients were positive (40%). For Pn 18 patients were positive (90%)

Conclusions: Our results are not different with other microbiologic studies regarding asymptomatic apical periodontitis.
