Examination of Compressive Strength, Water Sorption and Solubility in  Cements

Objective:

The aim of this study was to determine water sorption, solubility and compressive of adhesive cements.

Method:

Tested cements polycarboxilated (Durelon), glass ionomer (Ketac Cem), resin based glass ionomer (Ketac Cem Plus) and resin based cements (Multilink Automix, Rely X U100,  Rely X ARC, Panavia EX, Super Bond C&B, Clearfil Esthetic, BisCem,Variolink II) were preferred. For water sorption and solubility tests, teflon molds had 15 mm diameter, 1 mm height were prepared (n=10).  The solubility and water sorption values of the samples were calculated in 1st and 7th days. To evaluate compressive strength of cements which will be tested, teflon molds cylinder samples which has 6 mm height and 4 mm diameter were prepared (n=10). The cement samples which were put into distilled water were stored in etuve at 37±1°C for 24 hours. Then the pressure tests were performed. Kruskal Wallis and Mann Whitney U with Benferonni correction were performed for statistical analysis.

Result:

Ketac Cem Plus, Ketac Cem and Durelon showed the highest water sorption values in 1st and 7th days water sorption values. When solubilities of cements were evaluated, Ketac Cem Plus and Durelon had the highest solubility value in 1st day. Rely X ARC, Variolink II and BisCem were increased their dissolved weights. When 7th day solubility values were evaluated, Durelon and Ketac Cem were solved at most, all resin cements except Panavia EX and Super Bond C&B were holded water in their structures. Low pressure resistance values were found for Ketac Cem Plus and Durelon. Higher pressure resistance values were recorded for Ketac Cem and resin based cements.

Conclusion:

There is no dental cement that has every ideal specification. Clinicians should choose materials by being conscious of chemical, physical and biological properties of them.
