Effect of Ethanol to Self Adhesive Resin Cement Bonding

Objective: The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effect of ethanol to bond strength between dentin and self adhesive resin cement with acid and ER:Cr:YSGG laser-etch procedures.

Method: Flat mid-coronal dentin surfaces were obtained from 42 extracted human third molars. One indirect composite material (AdoroSR, IvoclarVivadent) and dentin were cemented by self etch adhesive resin cement(Maxcem Elite, Kerr). The groups were randomly divided in six groups(n:7). GroupI-indirect composite material was cemented to the dentin by Maxcem as control, Group II-Maxcem with %100 ethanol application, group III-37% orthophosphoric acid-etching (Reco-Dent Intl Co, Ltd, Etching Gel) and Maxcem with ethanol and group IV-acid-etching without ethanol. Er:Cr:YSGG laser etching (Waterlase MD Turbo, Biolase) and Maxcem with ethanol  as group V  and laser and Maxcem without ethanol as group VI. Before cementation, dentin surfaces were polished with 600-grit SiC paper under running water to remove residuel enamel. Shear-bond strengths of all specimens were measured. Data were analyzed with one-way-ANOVA and Tukey tests. Subsequently, fractured surfaces of dentin were examined by scanning electron microscopy.

Result: No significant differences in shear-bond strengths were observed among all groups(p˃0,05). While the bond strength of Group III was greater than other groups and Group VI showed the lowest bond strength. Furthermore, in groups with the same surface condition, ethanol applied surfaces had greater bond strength than groups without ethanol.

Conclusion: % 100 ethanol application improves the bond strength between dentin and self adhesive resin cement. This study concludes that the ethanol application might be an alternative bonding procedure for bond strength of self adhesive cement to dentin.
