Influence of CHX-Application on SBS after Long-Term Storage of All-in-One-Adhesive

Objective:

The objective of this study was to evaluate the effect of different CHX application modes (pre-treatment with CHX-solution vs. CHX-incorporation into the adhesive) on the shear bond strength (SBS) of an All-in-One-Adhesive compared to a control.

Method:

Human molars were randomly divided into 6 groups (n=8). 96 flat enamel and 96 flat dentine surfaces were prepared on SiC paper grit 120 through grit 320. Adhesives used in this study were iBOND Self Etch (IBSE) and an experimental iBOND Self Etch containing 0.2% CHX (ECHX, both Heraeus Kulzer). Following treatment protocols were used within the groups: G1: control, enamel, IBSE; G2: enamel, ECHX; G3: enamel, pre-treatment with CHX-solution for 30s, gently air-dried (0.2% Chlorhexidine digluconate, 7% EtOH in water), IBSE; G4: control, dentine, IBSE; G5: dentine, ECHX; G6: dentine, pre-treatment with CHX-solution for 30s, gently air-dried, IBSE.

Venus Diamond (shade A2), was bulk filled in cylindrical plastic molds (Ultradent equipment) and cured for 20s. Both, adhesive and composite were cured separately using a LED LCU (Translux Power Blue, Heraeus Kulzer). SBS was determined after 24h, 1 month, 3 months and 6 months water-storage of specimens at 37°C using a universal testing device (crosshead speed 1mm/min). Statistical analysis was done by Kruskal-Wallis (enamel) and ANOVA (dentine) at p<0.05.

Result:

Mean SBS [MPa] on enamel/dentine after 6 months storage:

Enamel

18.6±12.9A

29.8±5.3A

37.1±5.9a

40.1±5.4a

36.6±6.0a

Different upper case letters show statistical significant discrepancies between enamel groups. Different lower case letters show statistical significant discrepancies between dentine groups.

Conclusion:

Within the limits of this study, pre-treatment with CHX and the incorporation of CHX into the tested all-in-one adhesive compared to the control group does not influence statistically significant SBS after 6 months storage. Study was done by Heraeus.
