Smoking habits in a Portuguese adult population - pilot study

Objective: evaluation the prevalence and smoking profile of Egas Moniz Dental Clinic adult population in a health service research.

Method: Pilot study with a convenience sample consisting of 46 adult subjects. The sample was collected during the second semester of 2011/2012, at the MDCPAII unit of Egas Moniz Dental Clinic - Almada - Portugal. Data were obtained by a 13-item anonymous questionnaire, which included questions about socio-demographic variables and tobacco dependency (Fagerstrom test). 46 questionnaires were applied, and 45 were considered valid. Exploratory and descriptive analysis of the data was performed by SPSS 21.0

Result: Smoke prevalence was 9%, 51.1% female and 48.9% male. 82.2% are active workers and 55.6% are single. Women tend to smoke their first cigarette after 60 min, men between 30-60 min and they more commonly smoke it after 5 min.Women smoke less cigarettes than men (31.1% female smoke less than 10 cigarettes a day, 31.1% male smoke 11-20).The 18-40 age group is the only that smokes 21-30 cigarettes (6.7%). Is the active population who smokes the most and tends to smoke 60 min after wake up. Adults that earn more than 4 minimum salaries start smoking 30-60 min or 60 min after wake up (22.2% and 28.9% respectively). The first cigarette is not the most difficult to not smoke, especially for women (20%). When men are sick/abed they smoke more than women (24.4% male, 15.6% female).

Conclusion: The prevalence of dependency level is low, the majority was female. The dependency degree changes depending on age, gender, salary, is important to define the smoker profile by the number of cigarettes and his socioeconomic context. As the value of the Fagerstrom test was the same for all subjects, it was not possible to perform an association / correlation analysis.
